Chapter 6

Librarians Think Highly of Themshelves

Mackenzie looked down long enough to tap a single button on her phone and asked it to call the Dogwood Public Library. Knowing her library card was in her wallet, she could confidently pull off taking out a book as part of her sudden plan. The phone rang and when the feminine voice answered, Mackenzie pulled over again. She picked up the phone and pressed the speaker button.

“Sorry. I was driving. I’m here now. What did you say your name was?”

“Good evening. My name is Wren. How may I help you?”

Well, at least the first part of the plan happened to work out. “I was wondering what your hours are tonight. I’m driving back into town, and I wanted to know if I could make it before you close.”

“No problem. It’s Friday, so we’re open almost another two hours.”

“Perfect. See you soon.”

“We love periodical visits.” Mac ended the call but silently admitted to herself that was a good line for a librarian. Before she started driving again, she committed to not stopping until she reached the library. Setting a new destination on her GPS, Mac was prepared to make it there in the allotted twenty-seven minutes. She wondered if anyone else saw the estimated time of arrival as a challenge.

The parking lot was empty except for one large SUV. Since she knew Wren was watching grandkids now, she figured that made sense. Mac parked and got out of her car, heading for her first of three confrontations with newly retired teachers. If there was anyone who intimidated Mackenzie, it was a middle school teacher. Now that Wren was retired, Mackenzie wondered what kind of stories she could tell.

The solid oak door was heavy and difficult to pull open. Once she snuck through, it closed with a loud bang. Mackenzie’s instinct was to apologize, but there was no one in sight. She went to the mystery section like she had planned and started pulling out books then returning them to the shelf. As only a librarian could, Wren heard the struggle and immediately showed up ready to help.

“Is there something you are looking for?”

“Nothing in particular, but I’d love a new mystery. Do you have any new series or new authors?”

Wren started walking before she started speaking. “Right this way. We have a display of local authors here, and there is a teacher in Dogwood who recently began writing cozy mysteries. This is her first series, and it’s set in New Hampshire. I guess she grew up there. I’m not sure how many she is planning, but there are four out so far.”

“Do you know the author?”

“I do. She came in to donate the books to the library, but I also worked with her for several years before I retired this past spring.”

Mackenzie added a small clap and bounce when announcing, “Congratulations. You must be happy to be retired. Any big celebrations for your retirement?”

Wren frowned. “We did have one. We were joking about ‘Jumping Into Retirement.
